Shows how each formula contributes to your average ideal weight. If current weight is provided, the chart highlights your gap.

What is ideal weight and how is it estimated?

Ideal body weight (IBW) represents a height-based estimate of a weight that is commonly associated with favorable health outcomes. Clinicians, students, and fitness professionals use IBW to set dosage baselines, plan nutrition, and communicate goals. Because no single formula fits all body types, this calculator compares multiple medical equations and provides an average.

Formulas included (metric and imperial supported)

Devine: Originally for dosing, widely referenced. Male: 50 kg + 2.3 kg × (height in inches − 60). Female: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × (in − 60).

Robinson: Male: 52 kg + 1.9 kg × (in − 60). Female: 49 kg + 1.7 kg × (in − 60).

Miller: Male: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg × (in − 60). Female: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg × (in − 60).

Hamwi: Male: 48.0 kg + 2.7 kg × (in − 60). Female: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg × (in − 60).

Healthy BMI range for context

The calculator also shows a healthy weight range using BMI 18.5–24.9. This helps you understand where your ideal estimates fall relative to a standard screening range.

Frame size adjustment (optional)

Body frames vary. For quick planning, this tool applies a simple approximation: Small (−10%), Medium (0%), Large (+10%) to the averaged ideal weight. It is optional and does not replace professional assessment methods that use wrist or elbow breadth.

Practical tips for students and professionals

Use as a guide:

Treat IBW as a reference point alongside body composition, fitness, and medical history.

Track trends:

Combine IBW with regular weigh-ins and simple girth measurements for actionable progress.

Personalization:

Context matters—age, musculature, and health status influence your best target zone.

Tip: If your average ideal weight differs from your current weight, align your plan with sustainable habits: nutrition quality, resistance training, activity, sleep, and consistency.

FAQs

HOW TO calculate my ideal weight accurately?

Select your unit system and sex, enter height (and current weight if you want comparison), choose a frame size if desired, then select “Calculate Ideal Weight.”

HOW TO switch between metric and imperial?

Use the unit chips at the top. Metric uses kg/cm and Imperial uses lb/ft+in. Conversions are handled automatically.

HOW TO read the different formulas?

The tool computes Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi estimates. It shows each value, their average, and a frame-adjusted target for quick planning.

HOW TO use the healthy BMI range?

We reverse BMI 18.5–24.9 using your height to display a healthy weight range. Use it as an additional context to the formula-based ideal.

HOW TO plan next steps if I’m far from my ideal?

Work toward gradual, sustainable change. Consider nutrition quality, protein, strength training, daily activity, and consistent sleep. Seek professional guidance when needed.
